 OF ISMAT CHUGHTAI 


Ismat Chughtai remains an integral figure and is one of the pioneers in Urdu literature . She was born on 21th August , 1911 in Badaun , Uttar Pradesh . Her works include short stories like "Kalyan" , "Ek Baat" , "Choten" , and others . Most of her works express about women and their desires and also the oppression they come across . One of her most celebrated masterpieces is "The Quilt" , originally titled "Lihaaf" . The story is a controversial one . It first appeared in 1942 in "Adab-i-Latif" which was a literary magazine in Lahore . Here , it is important to mention that the writer had to bear the charge made against her for carrying obscenity in her writing that might surely badly affect the society . She was summoned to court for the charge and had to receive endless scathing criticism . Nevertheless , Ismat Chughtai gained notoriety for her work as she wrote in her memoir .
