 "THE QUILT"

 OF ISMAT CHUGHTAI

The Quilt " by Chughtai presents a panorama of the narrator's practical and gripping experiences during her childhood . The narrator was then a nine years old girl . As she , each and every moment , argued and fought with brothers and sisters , her mother left her with Begam Jaan and went to Agra . While spending some days with Begum Jaan , she had a terrific experience which was really a prejudice to the narrator . There she found Rabbu , a Masseuse , whom the narrator called "an ugly woman!". She saw Rabbu massaging Begum Jaan's body all the time . Every night both of them had a tiff , and the narrator was scared and embarrassed by a shadow of the quilt like an elephant struggling inside , and that on Begum Jaan 's bed . But , one day , when the same function was going on , the narrator got very scared and nervously screamed "Aa..Ammi...." . But none paid any heed . So she gathered courage , switched on the light and had a glimpse under the quilt . She told the reader ," what I saw , ...... I will never tell anyone , not even if they give me a lakh of rupees.

In a nutshell , what follows is the child's documentation of the time spent there - her incomprehension of Begum Jaan and her masseuse Rabbu , her horror on seeing the quilt used by Begum Jaan  , taking puzzling shape on the wall at night and her fright for some maltreatments .
