FEMINISM IN "THE QUILT" OF ISMAT CHUGHTAI
FEMINISM IN "THE QUILT" OF ISMAT CHUGHTAI
As a definition , it is generally said that "Feminism" is a theory which supports social , political , educational and equal economic rights and opportunities for women . The word "Feminism" originates from French word "Feminisme" , a medical term . One who follows the theory of Feminism is called Feminist . This idea was first issued from the Enlightenment period of 18th century . The ideology was recognised by some pioneers like Mary Wollstonecraft and John Stuart Mill . Feminism incorporates the idea of prioritising equality for both male and female similarly . Moreover , it is a movement demanding the same human rights for women as men in the society . Radical Feminism , another branch of Feminism , is quite different because the one who follows this theory always wants to root out the patriarchy in the society , claiming social reordering . They claim that the root cause of women's oppression is unjust societal norms of male supremacy . So , that the society must be reformed again is claimed by radical feminist .
However , if we cast a close inspection on the enduring short story "The Quilt " written by Ismat Chughtai then we could perceive that the story express about a woman and her desires and also the oppression , rejection and betrayal she heavily faced .The story is a fitting example of the triumph of Feminism , and the Begum Jaan , a revolutionary as well as reactionary character , is often found to be the champion of it . Life of Begum Jaan is an image of suffering , depression , exploitation and subjugation . She has both a depressed and frustrated lot as she faces the denial and rejection by her husband , the noble Nawab Sahab . It is true that she is totally secluded in her husband's household , but she successfully converts the imposed seclusion to her advantage . Left alone in the zenana , she creates a world for herself . So , she finds a necessary means in Rabbu to tend to it , and she does . The protagonist Begum Jaan takes charge of her life and thus navigates her way through the blindings of patriarchal setup to express her physical urges and satiate them . Thus , it is widely accepted that Begum Jaan raises a voice for Feminism in "The Quilt" . Ismat Chughtai , by using her narrative techniques , has appropriately focused on the theme of Feminism in "The Quilt" . The story , in the truest sense , is a burning instance on Feminism .
