Comment on the title of the poem "Toba Tek Singh" by Gulzar.
(vi) Comment on the title of the poem "Toba Tek Singh".[5]
Ans. : One of the best written partition poems of Gulzar is "Toba Tek Singh" . The poem is a sublime one as it embodies the aftershock of 1947 India-Pakistan Partition . It is evident in the poem that the poet is deeply stirred by the inexpressible agony of Bishan Singh and partition pangs clearly enunciated in Sadat Hasan Manto's story with the same title. As well as this , the poem has been set with the allusion of Bishan Singh who leaves Pakistan and stands at Wagah border . The poet feels urgency to rush to meet him out of any obstacles to tell him about the climax and traumas after the official declaration of Partition . Utter absurdity , mindlessness , horror , and tragic endings of millions of destitutes are the themes of this poem . Besides this , Toba Tek Singh , now in Pakistan , is a town where Bishan Singh would live , but now he is homeless and has fallen into a dilemma standing on the newly drawn border . Thus , as the poem is an emotional and heart-touching response to Manto's story , Gulzar directly accepts the same title and flowers his poetic imagination .
