"THE SHADOW LINES''

BY

AMITAV GHOSH

"The Shadow Lines'' , published in 1988 and written by Amitav Ghosh , is one of the best as well as famous novels in Indian Partition literature . The novel has been constructed on the ground of memories and experiences of various characters and of the narrator in particular . The novel consists of two parts - " Going Away '' and " Coming Home " . However , the narrator's family comprises his grandmother Thamma , Mayadebi's elder sister ; Mayadebi and her diplomat husband named Shaheb have three sons - Jatin , an economist , Tridib , and Robi who later joined the Indian administrative service ; Jatin's wife is referred to as Queen Victoria , and his daughter Ila is constantly travelling to various countries with her parents . The only member of Mayadebi's family is Tridib who lives in his ancestral house in Ballygunge and spends most of his time in Calcutta .

Tridib saw May Price as a baby when he went to London with his parents in 1939 and they stayed with the Prices . The family friendship between two families began when Mrs Price's father Loinel Tera Sawsen and Tridib's grandfather Mr Justice Chandrashekhar Datta Chaudhari who was a High court judge met in Calcutta at seances .

However , by the time Tridib met May Price again in 1962 in Calcutta , the friendship had blossomed into love . This is central to the thematic concerns of " The Shadow Lines ". Robi accompanied Tridib , May , Thamma and Mayadebi to bring Jethumoshai from Dhaka to Calcutta . There they all witnessed the killing of Tridib and Jethumoshai by a communal mob . This was not described directly but later conveyed to the narrator as part of the hunting memories of both Robi and May Price .

Therefore , the novel is about an Indian family and an English family in the transitional days of 1960's conveying three cities - Calcutta, London and Dhaka . The novel focuses on nationalism, the shadow lines that are drawn between people and Nations which is not just an absurd illusion , but a source of terrifying violence as well .
