POSTCOLONIAL ELEMENTS IN "THE SHADOW LINES'' BY AMITAV GHOSH

POSTCOLONIAL ELEMENTS IN "THE SHADOW LINES'' BY AMITAV GHOSH

" The Shadow Lines '', published in 1988 and written by Amitav Ghosh , extensively incorporates the qualities of the postcolonial elements . The novel focuses on political instability , the aftermath of immigration , cultural detachment , societal unrest , religious conflict , quest for identities  and more like them . The novelist , through this novel , has successfully explored not only the colonial issues imposed on society by the force of time and history but also about the unwanted separation of people from each other . However , the postcolonial elements interwoven in the novel are sequentially upheld below :

(i) Obscurity :

A colonizer intentionally or unintentionally tries to remain unseen and unrecognised . Likewise , the narrator of this novel attempts to remain unnamed till the very end of the story . The writer  has kept the narrator's character vague as well as obscure as well as possible .

(ii) Memory :

It could be said that the Nobel is constructed on the ground of memories and experiences of various characters and of the narrator in particular . This is because memory plays an important role throughout the novel .

(iii) Imagination :

The narrator's uncle Tridib advised him to use the power of imagination to easily recognise places just by their name to travel . In this way , the named narrator imagined London .

(iv) Identity Crisis :

Since the commencement of the novel , identity has become one of the major problems and causes of suffering too . This type of problem is not just confined to the characters , but places and locations as well . So , " Identity Crisis " is a significant term in postcolonialism .

(v) Nationalism :

It is also another pivotal element of postcolonialism . It emphasizes " The Shadow Lines " we draw among ourselves, people and nations, which is a source of bloody violence than an absurd illusion .

(vi) Diaspora :

" Diaspora " literally describes people who have left their belongings and home country and move helter-skelter in search of places . For example , as far as the concept of diaspora is concerned , both narrator and Ila are diasporic , having experienced displacement from their native home land across the globe .

(vii) Independence

As a postcolonial text , the novel even reveals another notion that is Independence ; the lotion of travelling various places conveys this message . It is found that Indians can be disposed of modernism also called technology imposed on them by British colonizers . The only character opposite to such viewpoints is Ila who travelled a lot but saw a little .

(viii) Unbelonging :

The narrator's grandmother Thamma becomes curious as well as thoughtful to know whether she belongs to Dhaka or she is a citizen of Calcutta . In her bewilderment , she wanted to go to her homeland in Dhaka .

Therefore , the writer , throughout the novel , both explicitly and implicitly emits sparks of colonial elements of postcolonialism with the purpose of conveying the themes along with depicting the aftermath of colonization . Thus , the novel explores the postcolonial framework .
